VISIT TO FROMELLES
For many Australians the battle of Fromelles was their first experience on the Western Front. Your guide will take you to different sites where 100 years ago this diversion battle took place and where so many "Diggers" lost their lives.
With original WW 1 trench maps you will visit sites such as Sugar Loaf, Delangre, Cordonnerie... The memorial "Cobbers" is a tribute to the courage and sacrifice of Simon Frazer carrying on his shoulder a wounded soldier.
Together with your guide you visit VC Corner cemetery and memorial, Phaesant Wood cemetery and show your respect.
After visiting the new museum in Fromelles your journey continues to Ploegsteert (Plugstreet Wood).
We visit Messines and the Messines ridge. We visit Bayernwald, reconstructed German trenches. During a visit to a scale model of the battlefield we understand the progress of the battle. We also visit Toronto cemetery, Prowse Point, Pool of Peace and Hill 60 who are only a few places related to the big explosions of the mines on the 7th June 1917, a successful operation prologue to the 3th battle of Ypres.
TOURING IN FLANDERS ON THE YPRES SALIENT
Today we will discover the different phases of the 3th battle of Ypres and we will approach Passchendaele Ridge just like the Australians did in October 1917.
We start at Helfire Corner, follow the Menin Road, Hooge Crater and Clapham Junction. During our visit to Polygon Wood we discover the memorial for the 5th Division and see the last resting place for the 5 Australians reburied in 2007.
In Zonnebeke we visit the the Passchendaele memorial museum. After Broodseinde we reach Passchendaele Ridge and visit Tyne Cot cemetery, the biggest Commonwealth cemetery of the world. In the cloth hall on the main square in Ypres we visit the Flanders Fields museum.
At the end of the day Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate. Possibility to lay a wreath (ask us in advance).
VISIT TO THE BATTLEFIELDS OF THE SOMME
Two battles were fought in the Somme in which Australians where involved:
We start our tour discovering battle of the Somme 1916 and visit: Pozieres, Sunken Road, Gibraltar, memorial for the 1st division, Mouquet Farm, Loghnagar Crater, Sausage valley, Thiepval, Albert. We continue our journey further south and visit the sites related to the battle of the Somme 1918 such as Dernancourt, Corbie, the site were the Red Baron crashed.
We drive through Vaux, Mericourt, see the memorial for the 3th division. In Villers Bretonneux we visit the Australian memorial, Adelaïde cemetery and the Victoria school. In Le Hamel we visit the memorial for the Australian Corps. On the way back we visit Mont St Quentin and Bullecourt.
LIFE BEHIND THE FRONT LINE - FLANDERS FIELDS
We visit Essex farm were John McCrae wrote his famous poem: In Flanders Fields. In Langemark we visit the German cemetery. We visit Lyssenthoek cemetery and the visitor centre to discover how the evacuation of the wounded took place. In Poperinge we visit Talbot House and find out about life of the soldiers when they had rest and recreation. Also what happened to the thousands of civilians.
At the end of this tour we take you back to Lille on time to catch your train to your next destination.
