Camalou
in 1914-1918 |
My
guest house is called Camalou and it’s situated just 4
kilometers from Ypres town center. The history of Camalou
goes back to the 18th century, when it was part of a
castle owned by the Malou family from Ypres.
During
the Great War the building was the Headquarters of 4th
Brigade due to its strategic location in relation to the
battlefield of the Ypres Salient. Many of the roof timbers
above the guest bedrooms still display the British War
Department stenciling.
Many
soldiers from different allied countries who where billed
in the Ypres Salient stayed in and around what I call
today Camalou. I am busy to collect information from the
French, Australian, New Zeeland, Canadians, Americans and
English battalions. As soon I will have the information, I
will put it online.
At this
moment I found a picture and information about the
Americans at Camalou at the end of the war:

In the
‘creation’ of Camalou Guest House, I have taken great
care to ensure that the accommodation and services I offer
are to the highest of standards.
My
efforts started with a deliberate decision to limit the
number of guest rooms to three, in order that I may retain
my personal involvement with the running of my guest
house. From this starting point I set about the conversion
of a wing of my property, a task I thoroughly enjoyed -
and still do as I strive to constantly improve the
facilities offered to my guests during their visit to the
town of Ypres.

The
Lounge
I welcome the guest
with the beer Camalou. On that occasion I explain
the history of the house and provide information
about the area of Ypres. Books and maps from the
Ypres Salient are at your disposal.
