I
have lived virtually all my life in and around the ancient town
of Ypres (now named ‘Ieper’ as Flemish is more appropriate
in this region of Belgium). My passionate interest in the Great
War was kindled by fond childhood memories of being taken around
the battlefield by my grandfather, himself a veteran of the
Great War. My interest in the terrible battles that ravaged my
land between 1914 and 1918 is founded on a humanitarian empathy
for those who suffered, as opposed to the finer points of
military strategy.
Being
knowledgeable about the Great War is one thing, but to be able
to convey that understanding and knowledge to others is another.
I have always enjoyed speaking to people about my interest in
the Great War. To do so now as one of only a few registered
guides is a labor of love.
